The Kowa Highlander binocular telescopes are available with standard (achromatic) or Fluorite (apochromatic) objective lenses. They feature 82mm diameter, 450mm focal length (F/5.48) objective lenses that are fully multi-coated to enhance viewing, ensuring clear visual range and sharp images. The 32x eyepieces are designed to provide a wide field of view with ample angle and high eye point for easy and less tiring viewing. Optional interchangeable 50x and 21x eyepieces are also available (the Highlander will work with these three sets of Kowa eyepieces only). The Highlander is designed not only for astronomy but also to fulfill the needs of observation and surveillance professionals.
Besides a normal "Achromatic" objective lens, Kowa has designed a "Prominar Apochromat" model with fluorite crystal lenses available for those seeking higher optical performance. These fluorite lenses eliminate false color (chromatic aberration), which improves resolution and contrast.
The Highlander’s strong yet lightweight die-cast aluminum housing is extremely durable, with a rigid structure that can endure hard usage. Weight comes in at 13.6 pounds with the standard 32x eyepieces. The housing is waterproof and filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent the lens from fogging. Eyepieces are set at a 45 degree angle, allowing for easy, long term observation. The 45 degree angle is a good compromise for comfortable viewing on both terrestrial and astronomical targets. The binocular is designed with an individual focus (IF) system. Also included are built-in retractable dewshields that help protect against stray light and moisture.
The Highlander comes with the ability to be mounted on a standard 1/4" or 3/8" mounting stud, which means it can be used on our excellent Series 5000 tripod and head, or the Manfrotto 503HDV-028B combo that we sell. Other options for the Highlander include a custom Kowa-designed mount. A highly recommended accessory is the optional aluminum case, and of course the 50x and 21x Kowa eyepiece pairs offer great possibilities for expanding the magnification range. Every binocular we sell must pass a rigorous 14-point inspection that insures a high degree of both optical and mechanical performance, including testing for accurate collimation.
